Family: Husband Wayne (married 51 years!). Daughter Jennifer and her husband, Tom, live in St. Louis with their two daughters, Madeline, 20, and Meredith, 16. Daughter Jessica lives in Nacogdoches, Texas, with her husband, Hans, and their two daughters, Lauren, 25, and Annelise, 21. Lauren and her husband, Brandon, have a son, Braun, 2, our first greatgrandchild, who carries my maiden name.

Beauty secret/regimen: I couldn’t do without DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil. It’s an olive oil-based cleanser that makes my face feel SO good. My morning regimen consists of washing with DHC Mild Soap, eye cream, and moisturizer. At bedtime, I use the olive oil cleanser, eye cream again, and a nighttime moisturizer.

Makeup: Minimal. I use a pressed powder foundation, powdered blush, and lipstick for everyday makeup. I amp it up a bit for special events.

Boutique: Does Cabelas count?

Salon/stylist: Adam Welch at his Changes salon has been in control of my hair since we moved to Gamaliel in 2001. I went into great detail explaining how my stylist had done my hair in St. Louis. If Adam got upset, he didn’t show it, he just proceeded to do it better.

Place to shop: I’m really not much of a shopper but a complete metamorphosis takes place whenever I’m in Eureka Springs. I love artsy jewelry and like to look for artsy gifts for daughters, granddaughters, and friends.

Lunch with girlfriends: Riverview Café at Gift-Tiques and Blackbird Café are two local lunch favorites for dining with friends.

Restaurant for evening out: My husband has taught me to appreciate sushi (most), so Bamboo Garden is our local favorite place for an evening out. PJ’s is also high on my list.

Spot for a picnic: I pack cheese, fruit, dry red wine, a good book, and my husband to picnic on our boat in one of many beautiful coves on Lake Norfork. He fishes, I read.

Way to spend an evening: Wayne makes wonderful paella on his Green Egg. We’ll invite 8-12 good friends over for the evening to enjoy it with us. We also enjoy weekly card games of “500” with friends Lisa and Fred Gordon. Lisa and I are very skillful players, but Fred and Wayne have all the luck.

Activities: I was an art teacher in St. Louis County, and I finally have time and a studio of my own in which to paint and create. I can only go so long without a brush in hand. I’m involved with several art clubs and art groups in the area. Calling Bingo at Good Samaritan on Monday afternoons is another activity that I enjoy. Factor in boating on Lake Norfork, gardening, yoga, and reading, and the time left is used to clean house (superficially).

Way to relax: Yoga stretches in the morning, painting in my studio, and reading a good novel are all ways for me to relax.

Advice for younger women: Slather on the moisturizer and the sunscreen. When we’re young, it doesn’t seem important. When we realize that we can’t exactly call ourselves young anymore, it becomes very important.

Treat: I can think of lots of “treats.” I’ll go with food as it seems that I’m always watching my weight. A real treat would be eating a giant piece of rhubarb pie with ice cream and not feeling guilty.

Vacation: We’ve had lots of wonderful scuba diving vacations in the Caribbean so that would be my choice again. Warm clear water, white sandy beaches, and balmy breezes – it doesn’t get much better than this.

Way to celebrate a friend: I’ve lost two good friends this past year. I still talk to them and offer toasts to our friendship; however, it’s much more important to celebrate friends each time you’re with them. A hug and a “luv ya” says it all!

10 things that every woman should have:
1. A supportive husband
2. A loving family
3. Special girlfriends
4. A great hair stylist
5. Flowers
6. A stack of books waiting to be read
7. A closetful of comfortable, classy shoes (I’m still looking)
8. A personal shopper (my dream)
9. More flowers
I can only think of nine. I’m truly blessed since I have most of my list. The shoes are the hang-up.

What I love about June/July: Heading for the lake with family and friends.

Dream for the future: The future is only a minute away. Don’t dream it. Live it!
What people might not know about you: I have over 250 ocean dives under my belt!

Motto: I have a bracelet my niece, Laurie, made for me. It’s inscribed with the words, “Enjoy the journey!” This says it all.  M! June/July 2014
