When the cancer treatments prescribed to treat Chuck Ketchum’s rheumatoid arthritis made him sick, his wife, Martha, researched options. She was studying naturapathy at the time and an ad for a free first session with a new reflexologist caught her eye.

“I lied,” Martha recalls Chuck saying about the information sheet he filled out prior to his appointment. He reported only one kind of arthritis on the sheet.

The reflexologist told Chuck exactly where he suffered from three kinds of arthritis, just by working with his feet. One year later, after regular reflexology visits, Chuck was off all medications but ibuprofen, and nine years after that has no evidence of RA.

“I need to learn that,” Martha said.

Today, with a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, she no longer works as an expert court witness but focuses instead on her massage business, Ancient Paths Holistic Massage and Health Center, a mobile massage service in Eureka Springs.

We caught up with Martha at Lynne Sterling’s tarot shop, where she was giving Salome Mibei of Berryville a reflexology treatment.

“Oh, it feels so good,” Salome said, interrupted from her repose on Martha’s comfy table.
